A note about the photograph on this page

The photographer is Leonard Nadel, who was a staff photographer for the Los Angeles County Housing Authority between 1949 and 1959.  It was taken at the intersection of Effie Street and Malvina Avenue in Palo Verde, looking up Malvina.  Notice the mailboxes clustered on Effie Street; residents had to walk to this spot to pick up their mail.

Addresses can be read on several of the mailboxes.  The mailbox on the top row in the middle-right — the one with the white lettering — says 1771 Malvina Avenue, which is the address of the home of the Aréchiga family, whose forcible eviction in 1959, just days before construction of Dodger Stadium began, has been heavily documented.

  What our friends are saying

"Thank you for such an informative site which highlights the plight of those relocated from Chavez Ravine.   My stepfather was a happy child growing up in the Palo Verde area.  He had many stories about living in the area and working at the [Ayala] store."

"Wow that is awesome thank you"

"
Dodger Stadium will always be a monument to the displacement of three entire communities"
